First, we will give the definition:
DNS (Domain Name System)- is a hierarchical, distributed in network system of databases that provides network users with additional services (technically realized on a PC – DNS servers that are running with special software), with the automatic conversion of queries, processed in a friendly for a man text format in digital IP address of the computer where desired resource is located.
Let’s soak in history to see where appeared DNS and why it is needed.
After launching first Sputnik by the Soviet Union in 1957, the U.S. create an agency designed to do researches in field of communications for security – Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). Agency should develop a draft of U.S. military communications, which could function normally during the natural disasters or nuclear bombs. Telephone Communications of U.S. were quite reliable. Damaging communication lines – meant the loss of control and management. They need a new technology that allows to have a connection with the violation of a direct line of communication. In 1961, a student from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Leonard Kleinrock described the technology, which required the breaking of the original transmitted data into packets and each packet transmission by different routes. In 1963, the head of ARPA John Liklider offered the first concept of the network. Larry Roberts in 1967, began to work on the embodiment of the ideas of John Liklidera in life. In 1969, the University of California established the first packet network using a single router, called ARPANET. After the opening of the commercial version of ARPANET Telnet in 1974 and the establishment of the first Ethernet network, a rapid and fast development of the network started – the first prototype of the Internet.
All computers, connected to the network ARPANET, worked on the protocol IP (Internet Protocol) and had the files of the /etc/ hosts, which contained the IP-addresses of other computers that were in the network. File /etc/hosts was updated when a new computer appeared in the network and it was sent to all other computers in the network. At the beginning of 1977 the number of hosts was in the vicinity of 100 and each of them had been prescribed by the names of the remaining 99. In 1982, ARPA issued a stack of TCP / IP protocols for heterogeneous computing environments. This year is considered to be the year of birth of Internet. TCP / IP protocol intended breaking files into packets and transfer them to different paths. The network began to develop at great speed. By early 1984 the number of hosts was more than 1000 files like /etc/hosts, which were used on each computer became more and more. There was some problems: traffic associated with the updating of information about new computers in the network threatened to block all communication lines, it became harder to find a unique symbolic name for new computers. So in replace a flat system
of computer names on the Internet in the mid 80s came a hierarchical system, known as Domain Name System DNS.
Before you buy any web hosting, you need to go through the web hosting reviews routine. Of course you need to be realistic and be aware of the fact that now unlimited hosting is a reality. But if you go through the nice number of cpanel web hosting sites – you will see the real picture.
